Self-contained vehicle certification for freedom camping

As part of New Zealand's commitment to protecting our natural environment, you can generally only freedom camp on public land if your vehicle is self-contained. This helps to keep our natural environment clean and safe, reduce pressure on local facilities and communities, and make freedom camping fairer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Freedom Starts With Certification

As part of New Zealand's commitment to protecting our natural environment, new regulations have been introduced for self-contained vehicles. These changes affect all freedom campers and vehicle owners who wish to camp on public land after 7 June 2026.

Self-contained vehicle requirements

Vehicles must meet these key requirements to be certified as self-contained:

Fixed Toilets

Portable toilets no longer meet the standard. Vehicles must have a permanently fixed toilet.

Other Requirements

Enhanced requirements for water supply, wastewater, ventilation and rubbish storage.

Mandatory Certification

Certification system is now managed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.

Green Warrant Card

Certified vehicles will receive a certificate of self-containment and a green warrant card.
